People generally rent storage units when they're moving or when they decide their homes are too cluttered. But even if you're not in one of these specific scenarios, it can be a good idea to rent a storage unit near your home. Even a small unit can give you a lot of flexibility and convenience in your life. Here are a few key ways you can use such a storage unit.

1. Stash your out-of-season items.

If you live in a climate with very distinct seasons, you probably have several sets of clothing, bedding, curtains, and maybe even decor that you rotate through as the seasons change. Storing all of these items can get frustrating. Under-bed bins only go so far. You can store things in the basement, but basements tend to get humid and musty. If you rent a storage unit, however, you can always keep your off-season items in the storage unit. Visit two or three times a year to rotate things out. It's a lot easier to keep things organized when you store off-season items on a totally separate space.

2. Store your rarely used sporting items.

Are you involved in a sport or outdoor activity that requires a lot of equipment, such as kayaking or cycling? Unless you engage in this activity multiple times a week, it won't be too much hassle to swing by the storage unit and pick your things up before you head out. Storing these items outside of your home frees up space in your home, and it also helps you avoid getting your home dirty.

3. Store things you're on the verge of getting rid of.

Do you have things in your home that you don't think you really need to keep, but that you're also hesitant to get rid of? If you rent a storage unit, you can use it as a place to stash such items. If you find yourself going back to the storage unit to fetch the item within a few months, then you know you actually do need to keep that item. On the other hand, if an item sits untouched in the storage unit month after month, this should reassure you that it's fine to sell or donate that item.

Storage units can be used for all sorts of purposes. You may want to consider renting one just to have it available to use in any or all of the ways described here.
